Commonwealth Pier Hosts Sail Boston
A landmark maritime celebration brings international tall ships, cultural performances and waterfront programming to Commonwealth Pier.
For the first time since 2017, the world's tall ships returned to Boston, bigger, more international, and more meaningful than ever. As the grand finale of Sail250, the nationwide celebration of America's 250th anniversary, Sail Boston brought more than 60 ships from over 20 countries into Boston Harbor, and Commonwealth Pier was right in the middle of the action, welcoming over 100,000 visitors across six days of festivities.
Commonwealth Pier hosted three international tall ships up close. Chile's Esmeralda, a 371-foot barquentine, was welcomed by a Chilean dance troupe performing along the Harborwalk as the crew sang their national anthem. Uruguay's Capitán Miranda, a 210-foot three-masted schooner known around the world as her country's floating ambassador, brought a vibrant international presence to the pier. And Peru's BAP Union, a 379-foot barque and the largest sailing ship in the Americas, made a striking arrival with crew members standing on every yardarm, welcomed by a Peruvian dance troupe on the Harborwalk.
It wasn't just the ships that made the experience special. The Cove at Commonwealth Pier hosted a maritime heritage exhibit featuring ship models from the Lannon Ship Gallery and the premiere showing of Built on Cod from the Boston Fisheries Museum, an exhibit exploring how cod shaped New England's economy, trade routes, and role in the American Revolution, on view through the end of July. Just steps away, the newly opened Museum of American Finance, a Smithsonian-affiliated museum that debuted at Commonwealth Pier on July 3rd with free admission, welcomed strong Sail Boston crowds and sparked conversations with educators already planning fall class visits. Along the pier's growing restaurant lineup, Daily Provisions stayed open throughout the event and posted record sales, and Salt & Straw hosted a preview pop-up ahead of its July 24th opening.
Signature moments carried the energy across the property: a Navy flyover and a UK Royal Air Force flyover lit the sky, there were fireworks visible from Commonwealth Pier on July 11th and July 15th, and more than 1,000 cadets marched down Seaport Boulevard in dress whites on July 13th.
